Topic: The readings and videos for this unit have offered you a variety of ways to think about what work might look like in the future and how you might find your place in the changing world of work. Your assignment here will be to write your own “philosophy” of work. Do you agree with Joseph Campbell (see the quotation above) and Larry Smith that we can only achieve a great career if we “follow our bliss? Or, after reading “The Four-Year Career” and “Career Success Starts with a ‘T’” do you feel that a successful career will depend more upon your ability to identify and develop a certain set of skills? Is it possible to find a balance between the two? What will a “great career” look like in the future? You will write a 700-900 word essay. The first part of the essay should explain your philosophy of work. The second part will discuss the ways in which you hope to implement that philosophy in your career. Your essay should, as always, begin with a clear thesis statement that sums up your ideas about work and hints at how you might put th
ose ideas into action in the future. Use examples, quotations, and paraphrased passages from the readings and videos to support your points. This paper will require a high level of critical thinking as well as a great deal of thoughtful engagement with the texts that we have read/viewed. The paper should be prepared thoughtfully and carefully, showing rigorous editing and proofreading. Papers that have not been prepared carefully will receive much lower grades or will not be accepted. All papers must be presented as completed and acceptable typed rough drafts for class editing activities considerably prior to the final draft, and if this process isn’t followed, the final draft will not be accepted. Extra drafts and feedback are encouraged and will be given some extra credit. The paper must be long enough for the detail and depth required of the assignment. These papers should also be in acceptable manuscript form: double spaced, with one-inch margins, an appropriate title, heading, and headers.
