Your task is to use a think-aloud protocol for testing the usability of a website. You can choose any website. Choose a scenario that a participant must complete using that website. For example, you could ask a subject to visit Amazon.com and report on the storage capacity of the Kindle Fire HD. The participant in your assessment must be a person besides yourself. Feel free to use a family member, friend, or co-worker.If you would like to record the session so that analyzing the data will be easier, I recommend that you consider using a screen capturing tool such as Google Hangout with YouTube (for instructions). Alternatively, you can use your cellular phone and record a video of the session. If during the session, the participant is not thinking aloud, remember to prompt them to verbalize their thoughts. The article by Charters suggests that you prompt them with a sign rather than telling the subject to Think aloud!.You will be required to submit a 3-5 page written summary of your methods and results. The written summary must include the following:METHODS (20 pts)A detailed summary of the scenario that you had the participants conduct. After reading this summary, I should be able to duplicate the same exact scenario (12 pts).An explanation of the experimental setting and how you recorded the session. Your written summary should answer the following questions
(3 pts):Where did the study take place? What type of computer and operating system did you use?How did you record the participants verbal thoughts?A description of the participant (3 pts)How old was the participant? What was the participants gender?Did the participant have experience using the computer?Has the participant ever visited the website before? If so, what did they do when they visited the website previously?Explain the method that you used to interpret the think-aloud data. Use one of the methods described in the lecture or the Charters paper (see pages 74-80). (2 pts)RESULTS (10 pts)Summarize the results of the think-aloud protocol using the method you described above. This linked paper provides a great example of one way that think-aloud data can be summarized. (6 pts)Provide recommendations for improving the design of the webpage (4 pts)Here is an example of the assignment from a prior student: Example of assignment.pdfGuidelinesLength: 3-5 pagesFormat: Follow correct APA Style 7th ed. and include all required components.Help with Research and Writing: View the CSS Writing and Research online resource for help with all aspects of your writing.Submitting your assignment: Written assignments must be submitted in Brightspace as an attachment.
