My topic will be the avoiding procrastination. My three main points will be the mental mindset, the planning, and the action against procrastination. My three outside sources for my speech will be This Time It’s Different. by Peter Andrew Sacco from the Society for the Advancement of Education, The end of painful procrastination? by Jessica Hamzelou from The New Scientist, and Procrastination and conterfeactual thinking: Avoiding what might have been by Fuschia M. Sirois from the British Journal of Social Psychology. My audience will be my siblings who have been through college so I will be using examples that include deadlines for assignments and writing essays in one night. I will also use the factor of engaging with my audience and having them tell me what their worst experience with procrastination was to keep them engaged. I believe havign the audience participate and relating examples to them would be the most useful in my speech to create and audience-centered message. I don’t have many concerns for my speech other than limiting distractions for my audience, but I think if I do well in keeping them engaged, that shouldn’t be a problem. mental signs of anorexia. As for “outside” sources, I will be using scholarly websites. I will evaluate them thoroughly, making sure they are relevant, current, and the author is credible and has honorable credentials. I will only be using factual primary sources. I know that in order to present an “audience-centered” message, I need to put the spotlight on my audience rather than myself. By doing an audience analysis, I know that I will need to use words and examples my audience can understand and relate to. For example, my audience will consist of 18-19 year old females with similar beliefs and social classes as myself. Anorexia is a topic that I believe is important for young girls to be informed about. They may have friends going through this eating disorder or may even be going through it themselves and I feel this speech can genuinely benefit them. I tried to make my topic something that would genuinely be interesting for my audience. I know that since my audience will be online, there is going to be a slight barrier of communication as to if it was an in person audience, but I plan on still presenting an audience-centered message by interacting with my audience and acknowledging their presence. For example, asking them questions to which they raise their hand in response and preventing boredom. I want them to have fun and learn!
My only concerns for this assignment is that I will stress out. I feel that since my audience is 3 people that I know, I am less likely to stress out, but I have not presented a speech since eighth grade which was a very long time ago! I am hoping that with enough practice, my nerves will ease.
