You will create four legal briefs but they WILL NOT be submitted separately. They will be submitted as one document but you must clearly indicate the briefs by the titles on each. There will be one cover page for the four briefs. See other directions for cover page and I highly recommend reviewing the examples on Canvas in the Case Briefing Samples folder.
For the first one, review the cases from the Significant Court Cases worksheet in the course documents file folder. Select one (1) case relating to a topic that pertains to corrections or corrections facilities and conduct the appropriate research to support your briefing.
For the remaining three briefings, review the handouts on the Bronx 6, Scottsboro Boys, and Groveland Four cases. Conduct additional research as needed. Prepare the briefs based on your research and the information provided in the articles posted on Canvas.
The goal of this assignment is to assess your ability to follow the directions prescribed in the handouts to create an acceptable legal brief.
Required writing guidelines:
Cover page with proper header (APA 7the edition format), 1” margins, double-spaced, no justified margins, 12-point Times New Roman font
Cover page must include specific elements, come down to 2/3 section of the page and center:
Assignment title (DO NOT include the word assignment)
Prefix number and course name
Student’s name
Professor’s title and full name
University’s name (Do not use FAMU)
Date (i.e., June 5, 2022 – no letter after numbers)
Each brief should be formatted so that I know where one begins and ends even though it will be submitted as one document. Please DO NOT merge or combine briefs.

ed in the handouts noted above (review examples on Canvas) and the following note.
NOTE: Every brief should include, at a minimum, the facts of the case, the legal issue, the legal principle applied in the case, the holding and reasoning of the majority, and a summary of any concurrences and dissents. Each brief should not exceed 600 words, excluding the concurrences and dissents sections. Edit if necessary to meet word count.
APA compliant reference page (APA 7th edition format)
Format should include 1 inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, double space and hanging indentation
Research information should be documented in proper in-text citations and the reference page. Where there are judges identified in the Holding and Reasoning and Concurrence/Dissent sctions, follow example formats. Those definitely need to have a reference on the reference page.
Review the APA documents on how to format legal references in the event you need to use them.
References without an author: You MUST use Professor’s Preference for formatting which is outlined in the APA handout in course document files (page 28). If you have any questions about formatting, do not hesitate to contact me.
Please cite the four articles listed in this assignment on your reference page to avoid deductions even though they may not be in the brief. This is to let me know you read it and you know how to format the articles. The information is provided on each article.
The final reference page should have at LEAST eight (8) total references – the four articles on how to create a brief and the references for the four cases used in the briefs.
