Black bullet points are REQUIRED components of this assignment. The other points are examples offered to give you an idea of what types of things would be acceptable within these components. The examples below are not applicable to every film, nor is this an exhaustive list. Please feel free to use it or go beyond it.
a very brief plot synopsis
aspects of the film that are crucial to understanding what the film is like for someone who hasn’t seen it yet; things like (as applicable):
the stars
the director (and, to a lesser extent, any other crew members who are well-known)
country of origin (if not made in the US)
it’s a documentary
it’s shot in black and white
it’s based on a novel
it’s a period piece
significant technical advances evident in this film (Avatar is a reasonably recent example of a film that was a sensation in large part because of its technical innovations; The Jazz Singer would have been in the 1920s; this really probably doesn’t apply to any on the list above)
it has graphic violence or graphic representations of sexual activity

r traits of the film
formal characteristics; these could be things such as:
story structure
for ex., episodic structure, use of flashbacks, etc.
cinematography
score
as applicable, obviously; these things should really stand out, though–just saying the director uses Three-Act Structure, close-ups, or score would be out of place, because so do most narrative film directors. The aspect/trait you identify should be unique.
content characteristics
genre info
topical or current issues reflected in the story
gritty, controversial, or taboo subjects in the story
background as to how the film fits into larger trends in filmmaking, the entertainment industry, etc.
your evaluation of the film
love it, like it, hate it, meh…
three aspects of the film that support your evaluation
at least one thing that contradicts your evaluation
this means that if you loved it, mention a flaw/weakness in the film or something that you didn’t think worked so well; if you hated it, mention an aspect of the film that is particularly strong or that works
Assume your audience (me) has not seen the film that you review. Typically critics in the press review films just prior to or immediately upon release.
