PURPOSE
To work together as a class and research the topic for the Final Poster, How will Climate Change affect Human Biology? We will do this by following Science Librarian Elena Maans-Lorincz’s instruction on how to research using the Library.
TASK
1) Read in The Washington Post
(Links to an external site.)
about How Climate Change is pushing the human body. Deadly heat waves sweeping the globe are prompting doomsday questions: Will parts of the world soon become too hot to live in? How will we survive? How climate change will affect Human Health in the Puget Sound

region has been summarized in this UW report.
2) Play the Meet Elena
(Links to an external site.)
recorded session to learn how to use the LMC databases to search for scholarly article
3) Research How will Climate Change affect Human Biology? or one of the 11 Human Body systems and provide documentation per the criteria listed below.
List 3 resources with an abstract or descriptive summary for each. The 3 resources must be of these types:
At least 1 Peer-Reviewed science article
At least 1 Scientific American
(Links to an external site.)
style paper
At least 1 government website or paper OR a nonprofit organization website or paper
Resources are recent (i.e. within the last 5 years)
APA
(Links to an external site.)
or MLA
(Links to an external site.)
formatted citations
4) Post your research in the Discussion with the 3 resources. For example,
Title/Topic: Hypertrophy, particularly cardiac hypertrophy (since that was all that’s popping up in the LMC) What it is, what causes it, and how it works/why it happens.
Resources:
#1) A Peer-reviewed scientific paper.
Shimizu, I., and T. Minamino. (2015) “Physiological and Pathological Cardiac Hypertrophy

.” Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, vol. 97, Elsevier Ltd, pp. 245–62, doi:10.1016/j.yjmcc.2016.06.001.
Abstract. Defines cardiac hypertrophy and categorizes it into 2 types, physiological and pathological. In general, physiological is natural, good, and for growth, and pathological is caused by external factors and generally harmful. It also mentions the sources of both types of hypertrophy and outcomes, as well as some of the “key molecules and cellular response involved” in it.
#2) Scientific American style.
Sile, S. (2021) Why Race Matters in Personalized Healthcare. Scientific American.
Abstract.Growing support for racial justice, has brought the issue of inequity in health care to the fore. Racial and ethnic disparities have been well documented in terms of unequal medical delivery and measures of health treatment outcomes. The article discusses how the medical community can make meaningful changes and address these gaps in care.
#3) Non-profit resource.
Bancos, I. (2018). “What is Serotonin.” Hormone Health Network, Retrieved 23 February 2021, https://www.hormone.org/your-health-and-hormones/glands-and-hormones-a-to-z/hormones/serotonin#:
Abstract. This article mainly discusses what body processes and functions serotonin takes a role in and the problems that can arise with mental health and low and high levels of the hormone. It is a good foundation to further research what serotonin can do in the body. I will use it to further deepen my understanding of where and what serotonin does.
CRITERIA
The assignment includes:
Sentence or question clarifying the topic that was researched.
3 resources (at least one is a peer-reviewed paper) with an abstract or descriptive summary for each
Resources are recent (i.e. within the last 5 years)
