The
capstone 10-week course, and every week I collaborated with my preceptor. We
discussed new topics each week and he taught me something about each subject. I
also learned about past and present experiences that he gained throughout his
career.
In
week one I reflected and felt like this week has been a little intimidating.
And defeated. After my first conference call with my professor and Preceptor, I
became more relaxed and focused. Met with my Preceptor, to discuss class
objectives, goals, and collaboration.
All of my assignments were done on time each week and submitted at
schedule time for my entire 10 weeks. I definitely developed new practice
approaches from the knowledge and skills provided during this time.
In
week two we developed a PICOT question. We collaborated with our preceptors to
assess the needs of our population which prompted us to develop a PICOT
question paper inclusive of eight peer-reviewed references. My preceptor and I
were in contact all week reading different resources and discussing ideas. last
week we talked about good resources for research papers. This week we learned a
lot about interprofessional collaboration. I will carry this into my profession
as a positively affects patient care.
In
the third week my preceptor and I discussed the health care delivery and
clinical systems. This system is ever-changing and adapts as the world changes.
Recently, the focus has become more on the patient. Not only is this field more
focused on the patients, but they want patients to become involved in their
care. Before the shift of care being patient-centered, health care was focused
on diseases. In many Hospital nurses have to involve patients and families in
their care.
Next
in week four, my preceptor and I focused on Ethical considerations in Health
Care Practices of Culturally sensitive care and how to ensure to incorporate
that into practice. To incorporate this one must know that there are four main
principles of ethics within the healthcare system. These principles are
nonmaleficence, justice, autonomy, and beneficence. My preceptor and I talked
about this issue and we are both in agreement that every patient is unique and
has the right to make decisions for themselves based on the way they believe
and what they value in life. One cultural consideration that we discussed was
people of the Muslim faith do not appreciate healthcare workers of the opposite
gender providing care to them. They rather care from the same gender. Which
also consider one’s left hand to be unclean. It is very important to be
culturally sensitive when taking care of patients.
In
week five my preceptor and I spoke about the subject: of practices of
culturally sensitive care. He mention that he has worked at many nursing
facilities where they actually provide a class just about the prominent
cultures surrounding the prominent location. At the beginning of the classes,
the staff would participate in cultural competence self-assessment. This made
me very curious to learn more about how culturally sensitive can plan a positive
roll in one recovery. I took a self-evaluation, and I was pleased to see that I
am culturally sensitive. my upbringing and the exposures I have had with many
people of different culture helps me alot. It also made me realize that it is
always room for improve when it shows up. Everyone deserve to be treated and
received the best care and that is why I must always strive to give the best
care and be culturally competent at the same time.
In
the sixth week, We touch on the
Integrity of Human Dignity in the Care of All Patients Human. dignity is a
professional component that is important in care delivery. Human dignity is the
respect accorded to the patient for the sake of humanity. For instance, dignity
involves all factors that are accorded to the patient such as self-respect and
perceived self-worth, support of physical and psychological integrity. We nurse
should always empowerment patient to ensure self-worth is inculcated in care
delivery.
Last
week we had a similar discussion when we spoke about cultural competence and
ethically appropriate care. I believe that God created all of us equal and in
his likeness,so he n

eed to treat people the way you would like to be treated.
This means that we need to respect everyone as we’re all creatures of Christ.
This may be hard because we are all different concerning the physical
appearance, sex, sexual preference, race, and economic status. My preceptor
pointed out that one must first evaluate oneself. Self-evaluation always helps
me to put myself in check in order to provide the best care. My preceptor
encourages me to be the kind of nurse who will give my all and provides compassionate care.
Next
in week seven, We discussed population health concerns. Population Health Concerns For most people, thinking
about health and health care is a very personal
issue. Assuring the health of the public,
however, goes beyond focusing on the health status of
individuals; it requires a population
health approach. America’s health status does not match the
nation’s substantial health investments.
The work of assuring the nation’s health also faces dramatic change, systemic
problems, and challenging societal norms and influences.
We discussed how the focus of healthcare
shifted with the Affordable Care Act from individualistic care to caring for
populations. From the perspective of my
preceptor, we both believe that education is key. The goal of population health
concerns is to obtain and keep up with health and continuously try to be cost
effective and improve quality.
Week eight brought a discussion of the role of
technology in improving health care outcomes. My preceptor and I spoke this
week about this week’s subject: we both agreed that technology has influenced and been of great benefit
to the healthcare system. Technology such as Electronic Medical Records (EMR),
medication barcode scanning, and advancements in 3 robotic surgeries, have
improved patient outcomes. For instance, the use of barcode scanning for
medication administration has decreased the amount of medication administration
errors throughout the healthcare system; and robotic surgery such as the da
Vinci Surgical System helps surgeons perform the least invasive surgeries to
improve patient outcomes and improve recovery rates after surgery. This will continued
to improve and grow, to help us healthcare worker provide safe and effective
care.
In
the ninth week,we discuss
Public health policies
are the laws and regulations put in place within health care to promote
wellness and ensure that specific health goals are met. According to the ANA,
health policy is at the center of healthcare reform. The emergency room has a
lot of policies in place to ensure the best possible care is provided to the
patients as well as to maintain their privacy and rights. Informed consent is
one example of a health policy, which ensures every patient has been made aware
of all procedures, risks, and benefits, and has been provided complete
communication and transparency. There are many policies in place in health
facilities including financial insurance policies, HIPAA regulations, patient
rights, procedure policies, emergency policies, etc. Understanding the
rationale behind each policy helps health care workers understand and value the
processes of critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and decision making.
Policies are not just created to protect healthcare professionals, but also to
protect patients,
their rights, and
privacy, and to maintain clear communication which allows them to be active
participants in their
care. My preceptor informed me of all of the different policies within his
facility which are focus on daily. The ten week is finally here, but now i can
say, it seem like it came quick! This week I reflect upon my time I spent in my
capstone course. I am thankful for the collaboration and experience that I had
with my preceptor, The many class discussion with my class mates, this class
has given me load of knowledge and guides that I will used and share throughout
my career. Also thanks to my Professor for the conference call which help to
calm the process, when the course was looking so overwhelm. I am so thankful and grateful to God to help
me complete this chapter. I will apply everything that I have learned and used
it to grow in my future career path.
