Final Exam Essay Description and Instructions
You must use the Final Exam Essay TEMPLATE to format your final exam essay —use the section headings exactly as they appear on the template!
The final essay should have approximately 1,500-3,000 words (approximately 5-10 double spaced pages with 1-inch margins on all sides). The font size shall be no larger than 12 point. The word count (and your grade) is based only on your own words! The word count does not include quoted passages, section headings, “Works Cited” sections or appendices.
Papers will be graded on the substance of your words. Essays must be proofread and “style” points will be deducted for incoherence, illegibility, improper or inappropriate usages, incorrect spelling and poor grammar. Speak directly and to the point. Excess verbiage, awkwardness and muddy thinking (evident in essays that have not been read out loud) will be penalized. Use full, declarative sentences and avoid redundant or superfluous statements, rhetorical flourishes, and excess verbiage. DO NOT pad the word count and do not use words that are not your own unless they are enclosed in quotation marks and the source is acknowledged!
Exam Goal
In this course, you have been encouraged to expand your insights and judgments by learning how anthropologists explore our world. To do this, we have examined various aspects of anthropological endeavor and a variety of cultures, social classes, and populations. Your challenge is to demonstrate your understanding of these concepts as they apply to the materials we have studied — your task is to show that you have learned to think like an anthropologist. The most important aspect of this is for you to show your understanding of questions — the nuanced idea that understanding culture is not simple, but must be based on examining multiple points of view, physical and environmental “realities,” and different (shared) ways of thinking, being and acting!

EXAM SECTIONS — detailed instructions:
SECTION 1.1: Background
Do background research on the culture identified in the primary source. Your background research must consist of an in-depth description of the cultural groups your case study is based on. Note: in addition to the films, you must include references to at least one written source — e.g., journal articles; film transcriptions and commentaries (as on Folkstreams); or other Anthropological source.
Under the subheading “Cultural Group/Cultural History,” use quotes from your source materials to explain “who” you are studying, where they are and when they are — explain precisely what you

mean by terms like “Italian-American,” “African American,” or “Balinese,” etc. (say what the source of the terms is). You must explicitly state who identifies the group and how — accompany your statement with citations that clearly show where evidence for statement is to be found! Also, discuss social history (where they came from and a discussion of important historical and other events that may have formed “who” they are in the present).
Note: Citations and references must be drawn primarily from anthropology-specific books and peer reviewed journals! (Do not use internet sources like Wikipedia or Dictionary.com).
You may use demographic information from official online government sources including official census data, CIA information, United Nations and UNESCO sources, etc. You may also use (AND cite) written materials that are associated with the film sources you use. In every case sources must be cited according to the instructions in “Citing Sources for ANTH102” as found in the Course Materials section on Blackboard.
SECTION 1.2: Terminology
Define and discuss a minimum of ten (10) most relevant terms from your textbook that are related to the film. You may also include other important concepts and methods such as “reflexivity” and “participant-observation.” Please explain in complete sentences. Do not provide bullets with shorthand definitions. Make a separate paragraph and subhead for each term/concept and explicitly say how and why these terms are relevant to the film. Be careful to make good choices of terms and defend why you chose these words specifically. You will be graded on both the relevance and your demonstrated understanding of the terms.
SECTION 1.3: Ethnography
Barrel Model Analysis. Make a separate subhead for each level of the model and use materials exposed in “Background” (above) to discuss all four levels of the barrel model. Cite specific and detailed examples that clearly establish relationships between the different levels of the barrel model. You must refer to the films and written materials associated with them. Cite sources to support your arguments and that clearly establish the basis for any statements of “fact,” including who says what, etc. Be sure to check the spelling of names and places.

SECTION 2.1: Limitations of Current Research/Meta-contextual Analysis
What are the limits of your research and analysis? What was relevant to your research but not expressed in the film? What are the limits of your research methods? What are the gaps in
your knowledge? How does your research relate to the anthropological approaches mentioned in the textbook and films viewed throughout the course? Include a discussion of meta-contextual issues. IMPORTANT: You MUST discuss the quality and limitations of your sources!
SECTION 2.2: Conclusion
Sum up your observations and findings. What did you learn? Were there any surprises? Where should you go from here to learn more about the cultural groups you discuss?
SECTION 2.3: References/Works Cited
You must cite at least FIVE references in your paper. You must include at least TWO external sources other than your text and at least ONE MUST come from a peer reviewed journal. You must also refer to at least one anthropology-specific academic reference or text (either a journal article or book).
Textbook citations may come from sidebars from the textbook including “Original Studies,” “Anthropologists of Note,” “Biocultural Connections,” etc. You may also use materials associated with the films as external reference materials.
Failure to make appropriate and relevant reference to five readings will be penalized. You must say how these references are relevant — say how they support your ideas or thesis.
Cite your chosen readings clearly in both the body of your text, as well as in a “Works Cited” or “Bibliography” section at the end of your paper. Follow the writing guidelines carefully—these will be strictly enforced.
NOTE: DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!! NO EXCEPTIONS!
If you use someone else’s words, they must be enclosed in quotes and followed by a citation of the author, the year of publication, and the page number(s): “(author year: page(s)).” Similarly, if you paraphrased an idea from a specific author or source, you must have an appropriate citation.
You are encouraged to quote academic sources, as long as you explain the relevance of the quotations in your own words. You will be graded on your words — quoted passages are not included in the word count!
Inclusion of appropriate citations earns you credit. Plagiarism earns you an F!
DO NOT CUT AND PASTE FROM THE INTERNET — I WILL NOTICE AND YOU WILL BE PENALIZED!
