Reflect on your current media use and those you interact with most frequently, whether itΒs your family, friends, co-workers, etc. In what ways do you see yourself or others around you as Luddites? Assess your everyday behaviors, whether itΒs how you watch TV, follow the news, or scroll social media. Consider how your own environments affect the media you use or how you use it. In terms of stereotypes, I want you to select another state in the country, as discussed in class many times. (Please avoid NJ, PA, Florida, Texas or California, as they have been done before and also not done well.) Consider the dominant stereotypes about where you live, but also the dominant stereotypes about the state you selected. You may illustrate with specific examples, such as words, images, or details. How do examples reinforce the stereotypes or tropes? Explore how the geographic location, demographics, politics, and laws shape the culture. More
importantly, consider the paradigm shifts and ways that you and others are changing those perceptions. What choices can you make? Perhaps itΒs a recent news story or a different celebrity or character from a show or film that is changing a stereotype. Note both the technology and media changes you are witnessing currently, plus the changes that come from your media content.
