Assignment instructions
Answer the questions below in complete sentences and paragraphs. The word counts are suggested. You may exceed the word counts as long as your responses are well written. If your responses are much under the word count, you likely have insufficient detail in your answer to earn full points.
Ensure that your answers clearly identify who you are discussing. For example, “Basketball dad” or Steve would both be acceptable to identify Derek’s dad. As Todd Marinovich is not part of the main Trophy Kids documentary, you may not use him or his family in any of your answers below.
Only class materials (course content, assigned readings, Trophy Kids documentary, and the New York Times article linked to below) are required to complete these questions. No citations or references are required for class materials used in this assignment. However, all information should be summarized in your own words rather than quoted or copied, as a goal of this assignment is to evaluate how well you can apply the content.
Assignment Questions
Question 1: Select one of the families other than Andre and Amari who is in the potential or distinct abuse phases of ABPD. Describe one thing in the family that fits with the risky sacrifice stage, one thing that fits with the objectification stages, and one thing that fits with one of the abuse stages. Explain or speculate why you think that your chosen family’s ABPD progressed from the less severe risky sacrifice stage to the abuse phase. (250-400 words; 6 points)

families other than the family you choose for question one, and other than Andre and Amari. Imagine that you are a psychologist who is working with one of the families to reduce their ABPD behaviours. Describe three examples from the documentary where the family demonstrated ABPD behaviour. Then, for each of those examples, suggest three specific alternative behaviours the parent could have engaged in. The alternative behaviours should be actions that still encourage their child’s sports success, but in ways that are more consistent with a healthy parent-child relationship or “normal” sacrifice. (250-400 words; 6 points)
Question 3: Read the New York Times article “No Longer a Tigress.” It discusses Amari (featured in Trophy Kids) and her recent golf career at the age of 17. Based on the documentary and the article, evaluate if Amari’s family’s ABPD severity has gotten worse, gotten better, or remained unchanged. You must justify your evaluation by incorporating at least three pieces of evidence total, with at least one piece of evidence taken from the documentary and one from the article. (350-400 words; 8 points)
Formatting your assignment
If all of these requirements are not followed, one point will be deducted from your mark.
Include a title (like “assignment 1”) and your name at the top of your assignment or a full title page as the first page of your assignment.
Use a standard 11- or 12-point font (like Arial, Times New Roman, etc.)
Number your responses, but DON’T copy the questions into your assignment. Copied questions are flagged (falsely) as potentially plagiarized materials, and they artificially inflate your assignment’s word counts.
