President John Quincy Adams said, If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader. Nurse managers and other healthcare leaders can analyze and strengthen their leadership skills by examining types of leadership and needs for healthcare settings.
In this assignment, you will assess your leadership style and skills by selecting eight key characteristics of healthcare leadership and create an infographic justifying their importance and how they relate to healthcare settings. Then, you will outline a professional development plan to strengthen your leadership skills.
Step 1. Assess
Assess your leadership style and strengths by completing the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) Form 6S linked on the Learning Objects page. Note which factors were indicated as high, moderate, and low according to the instrument.
Complete at least one other leadership survey or questionnaire from those linked on the Learning Objects page or from another source.
You will not include specific scores or results of any assessments in your assignment submission.
Step 2. Review/Research
Review course materials and conduct additional research regarding leadership characteristics, styles, and models. Develop a strategy for recording any overlap from various sources or models.
Step. 3. Interview
Interview a nurse manager or other healthcare leader regarding the most important leadership characteristics in their position. Narrow the responders list to four or five characteristics to focus the
interview.
Step 4. Consider
Consider and jot down how these four factors of transformational leadership from the MLQ instrument might look in the role of nurse manager:
Idealized influence
Inspirational motivation
Intellectual stimulation
Individualized consideration
Step 5. Identify
Considering your work from Steps 1-4, identify what you consider to be the eight most impactful characteristics for leadership as a nurse manager.
Step 6. Create
Create an infographic detailing the eight characteristics you specified in Step 5 and how each can be demonstrated in the nurse manager role. A link for creating infographics is provided on the Learning Objects page, or you may use any other tool or design of your choice.
Step 7. Share
Share the infographic with the nursing leader you interviewed and ask for their feedback. Are there suggestions or recommendations to improve the infographic? Write a 1- to 2-paragraph summary of the feedback obtained from the nursing leader.
Step 8. Prepare
Prepare a 1- to 2-page professional development plan to strengthen three of your own leadership characteristics. The action plan should be a one-page outline stating the characteristics, justifying the need, including resources and activities to strengthen the characteristics, providing a timeline for completing the activities, and a follow-up evaluation to determine progress.
Step 9. Submit
Submit:
Your infographic as a PDF,
1- to 2-paragraphs summarizing the nursing leaders feedback, suggestions, or recommendations,
your action plan outline, and
an APA-formatted reference page.
