WEEK 4 PAPER
As we have discovered during the first weeks of our course, the therapist is faced with a multiplicity of ethical challenges in most every facet of the client-therapist relationship.
Consider the areas we have explored thus far: professional ethics, personal values, diversity issues, confidentiality, dual relationships, and boundaries.
Instructions
In a 5-7 page paper, consider these 6 areas and discuss the ethical elements found in the vignette provided below. Share how you as a professional therapist might assure compliance with each of them in working with this client. (100 points)
Vignette
Paula a 35-year-old botanist attends therapy to work on issues of emotional dysregulation. She reports that she becomes very reactive when someone disagrees with her and when she is dismissed. She also reports that she normally will throw things, yell, break and hit things, and say very hurtful things. She also notices feelings of resentment and embarrassment even months after these episodes. She states she has always been an aggressive person and isnt wanting to change who she is, just how she behaves especially with people in authority. She has lost several jobs and been close to being arrested and seriously hurt during these episodes. The last time she experienced one she also broke two fingers as she was hitting the wall in her bedroom. She also mentions that the only thing that gives her peace and helps her reset is her profession. She spends a lot of time in her plan nursery and conducting research on diverse plants.
Paula progresses very little in the first few sessions, but in the fourth session she mentions she is also recognizing feelings of sadness and pain when she becomes angry. She admits that when she was little she was often put aside by her parents and becoming angry and reactive got her the badly needed attention she craved. She was born and raised in Ecuador, and she states that it is very common to see large families, but she never understood why someone would have a child and not attend to it. She says that for t
his reason, and the issues she faced growing up, she would never have children.
A couple of session later Paula comes to therapy feeling very happy. She has reached out to her mother and her mother will be coming to visit her soon with the purpose of reconnecting with her and possibly attending a few collateral family sessions. She gifts the therapist a plant, mentioning that it is a symbol of strength and power. She states that she has felt empowered to make meaningful changes while remaining true to herself. She is very grateful for the work and the progress made and offers to plant it for the therapist since it needs very special care.
