For this forum, you will utilize the format below to write your first
language arts/literacy preschool lesson plan. Please refer to the model
preschool lesson plan that is posted on this module. In the section
labeled NJ Preschool Curriculum Standards, list one Literacy
Standard from the posted NJ Preschool Standards. If you prefer to create
a lesson plan for children K-3rd grade, refer to the NJ Core Content
Curriculum Standards. Please review these standards to recognize that
lessons often integrate many subject areas into one plan. Additionally,
keep in mind that Language Arts is a part of every lesson plan teachers
create. Phonemic awareness, print/sound relationship, and many other NJ
Core Curriculum Curriculum Standards for Language Arts are aligned to all lesson plans for early childhood-through third grade and beyond.
If
you want to challenge yourself, develop a lesson plan that integrates
mathematics and language arts. If you are really ambitious, integrate
math, science and language arts! After posting your lesson, check back
for my feedback. No need to post on your classmates’ lessons, but please
read through all of my comments. In this way, you will be preparing for
your final project and advancing your lesson planning skills and will
be a major part of every lesson plan you create for your early childhood
courses.
Written Lesson Plan Criteria for Teaching Preschool Language Arts/Literacy Skills/Concepts
1. Language Arts standards from NJ Preschool Curriculum Standards list (or Core Curriculum Standards for K-3rd). You
can incorporate also Math and/or Science Standards if you are up to the
challenge. Make sure to fully state the standard you are focused on:
2. Lesson Objective: For you lesson objective, finish the following sentence: The students will be able to…
3. Motivation for Lesson: In
this section, state what you will say to the children to get them
interested in the lesson. Consider writing one or two open-ended
questions to give the children the opportunity to talk about the topic
you will present. That is

an effective motivation to introduce your
lesson and having pictures related to the topics you present makes this
an ideal motivation. Consider illustrated word cards, just one or two,
to foster phonemic awareness for preschool and kindergarten students.
4. Procedure: Write
a numbered list of things you will do to teach the preschoolers the
lesson objectives you want them to learn. Number each item, listing the
dialogue you will say, the questions you will ask, the book you will
read, the materials you will use and the activity you will guide.
Using
a book as a springboard for your lesson will help you organize your
lesson. Make sure to search online for a book that is appropriate for
the targeted grade level.) Describe exactly what you will do to TEACH
the children.
The last item in your list should be a whole group
activity where you guide the children to interact and participate to
show you what they learned. As the children interact and participate,
the lower level learners will have the higher level learners to model
the skill.
5. Assessment Activity: The group activity you
described in the last item in your list above is your assessment
activity. Now describe it here, as an independent activity, where you as
the teacher evaluate each child as they demonstrate the skill. If this
lesson was used in a real classroom, you would make sure to have a
checklist with each child’s name on it.
After revising your lesson plan to incorporate the feedback of your
professor, please upload your final copy here. Include a paragraph to
describe how you would demonstrate this lesson in a virtual classroom.
