For this assignment, you will work to revise one page of NJITs website or a website of an
organization connected to your professional field. Try to find a web page that is primarily
driven by written content rather than visual content, as evaluating writing will be essential for
this project. You must include the link to the web page that youve chosen. After youve selected a web page, the assignment will follow a three-step process:
Part 1: Write an analysis investigating the strategies that the web page uses to communicate
with its intended audience. In your analysis, you might try to answer some of the following
questions: Who is the intended audience? Is the page well focused and effectively organized?
What kind of language does the web page use? How would you describe the tone of the web
page? Your analysis should cite specific details and address how the web page aims to
communicate meaning based on our discussion of rhetorical situations, strategies and social
context. Your analysis should be two pages.
Part 2: Rewrite the content of the web page based off of your analysis. Try to use language
that targets a specific audience, and maintains awareness of the social context. Do not reuse
the language on the website; instead, try to reinvent the content as if you were hired by NJIT
(or the organization youve selected) to be a technical writer. The goal is to practice
developing original writing while considering methods of organization and
persuasion. The
length of this part of the assignment will depend on the web page youve selected. This part should be one page.
Part 3: Write a reflection piece explaining your approach to your revision. Explain the
choices that you made, and why you believe these changes were justified. Im mostly
concerned with understanding how and why you were able to arrive at particular writing
choices throughout the writing process. In this process, it might be useful to point out flaws
that you identified in your analysis of the website, and to explain how you attempted to
address these flaws in your revision. Your reflection piece should be two pages long.
Each part of this assignment must be submitted in order for you to gain full credit. The goal
of the assignment is not only to better understanding the rhetorical purpose of writing for
digital environments, but also to develop an understanding of the writing process as a whole.
This means learning to observe, revise and reflect on the writing choices that you or other
authors have made. Between the website analysis, the rewrite of the website, and the
reflection piece, the project should total five pages of writing.
