The popular artifact that I will be discussing about in this post is the dreamcatcher. The dreamcatcher has been viewed and seen in media hundreds and dozens of times and many people see it as something aesthetic without learning the true purpose behind it. ive unity, or something tacky. The usage of dreamcatchers became so popular that many people see them in giftshops, or in media, or even tattoo it onto their bodies. Citizen media or participatory media are media texts created by average citizens who are not affiliated with mainstream, corporate media outlets. With the rise of many people appropriating dreamcatchers and not understanding the history behind it, many Native Americans have come forward to try and educate the average citizen what a dreamcatcher is really used for, to not have them be sold in any gift shop with the tag saying, “Made in China” and rather buy them through authentic shops. Culture industry is when industries that mass produce standardized cultural goods that normalize dominant capitalist ideologies and create social practices that are uniform and homogeneous among people. We can take Coachella for example in this situation. Coachella profits off of the “boho chic” look and in many of the clothing you’ll see someone using a dreamcatcher for something aesthetic rather than what its true purpose is, which is to capture dreams and because they keep selling off of the “bohemian” look many people will continue to do it with no regard.
