You will find an account entitled Three Men Attacked by Robbers posted on the previous page of this module. This is a rare account of one incident during the California Gold Rush. These two accounts will be confusing in places but I want to see what you all make of it. The assignment is an exercise in reading the source carefully and seeing what you can figure out. In your post of 250 words or more, describe what you think happened. In addition, write about what this reveals about California during the years of the Gold Rush. Do you note any factual discrepancies within the text? What are they? What do you find most surprising about the actions of the participants and why? What parts of the account are confusing to you? What does the source not tell us? For context, please review this section of the textbook (Links to an external site.) on the California Gold Rush. We will cover that chapter of the textbook in more detail
later. I am just including the link now in case you need a little bit of information on what was happening in California at the time.Be very cautious. If you Google this event, you may find outside information that will lower your score. If I find you using details from outside of the text presented, you will lose points. I do not want you drawing on outside information to tell me what others think happened. Throughout this semester, you will be working with primary sources and drawing your own conclusions from the evidence. If you write the full 250 words and bring in details from the assigned reading (in other words, use some specific details from the reading, even if you are raising questions because you find a line or two confusing), then you should receive the full 25 points for the assignment. Just give it your best effort and you should earn the full points. I am more concerned with your thought process at this point.
