Response 1 Elizabeth Difference between Mark and Social Justice Market justice views health care as an economic good delivered under free-market conditions. It assumes that markets are more efficient in allocating health resources equitably (Market Justice and Social Justice: How they Conflict, Complement and Reform Healthcare, 2018). The distribution of medical care services and access to them are determined by peoples ability to pay. Social justice views health care as a social resource (Market Justice and Social Justice: How they Conflict, Complement and Reform Healthcare, 2018). It requires active government involvement in the delivery of health care under the assumption that the government is more efficient in allocating health resources equitably (Market Justice and Social Justice: How they Conflict, Complement and Reform Healthcare, 2018). Medical care is regarded as a basic right; all citizens have equal access to medical care. Health care delivery in the United States is characterized as a quasi- or imperfect market (Market Justice and Social Justice: How they Conflict, Complement and Reform Healthcare, 2018). Tension between market justice and social justice In some areas, the principles of market justice and social justice complement each other. In other areas, the two are in conflict. I work in a hospital where I see patient who have private insurance and patient who have Medicaid or Medicare. The principles of market justice and social justice complement each other with private, employer-based health insurance for mainly middle-income Americans (market justice), and publicly financed Medicaid and Medicare coverage for certain disadvantaged groups and workers compensation for those injured at work (social justice) (Budetti, 2008). The two principles collide, regarding the large number of uninsured who cannot afford to purchase private health insurance and do not meet the eligibility criteria for Medicaid or Medicare. The two principles complement each other when private and government health insurance programs enable the covered populations to have access to health care services delivered by private practitioners and private institutions (market justice) (Budetti, 2008). Tax-supported county hospitals or city hospitals in large cities, public health clinics, and community health centers can be accessed by the uninsured in areas where such services are available (social justice) (Budetti, 2008). Conflict between the two principles of justice arises in smaller cities and towns and large rural. Nursing role in achieving social justice The role of a nurse is to understand all the challenging state of being a patient. The role of an ethically conscious, socially-just nurse is to honor the commitment that he or she has made to uphold the âNursing Code of Ethics,â through and through the treatment of each patient. References Budetti, P. P. (2008). Market Justice and US Health Care. PNHP. Market Justice and Social Justice: How they Conflict, Complement and Reform Healthcare. (2018). Nursing answer. Response 2 Amber Market justice asserts that people only have the right to goods and services if they obtain it according to the guidelines of entitlement. It allows inequality as long as this result to a fair market system (Difference between Market Justice and Social Justice, 2020). Social justice emphasizes that basic need such as: income, housing, and health care should be given to all citizens as part of their fundamental rights (Difference between Market Justice and Social Justice, 2020). The only thing I can think of as far as an example of tension between market and social justice would be the frustration patients have when we refer them to certain specialists and they dont accept their insurance. The main insurance that most physicians offices do not accept is Medicaid. Sometimes it can be very hard when one of our patients has Medicaid and need referred for an issue but cant be seen. If the patient is in pain or needs an issue taken care of more immediately and we are having to spend a lot of time looking for a doctor that will accept their insurance it can be disheartening and frustrating to not only the office staff but also the patient. The role of the nurse in respect to social justice is making sure to understand the challenges of being a patient. If a patient is experiencing a social injustice we, as nurses, can advocate for the patient and help them to overcome that injustice. Nurses can also help to give resources to patients in regards to this as well. Difference between Market Justice and Social Justice. (2020, February 27). Step 2 Read and respond to two other students posts by Friday 11:59pm MT. Read other students posts and respond to at least two of them. Use your personal experience, if its relevant, to support or debate other students posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support your opinions. Cite any sources in APA format. Response 1 Randy QSEN stands for The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses. QSEN was established to prepare future nurses with the challenges that they face when it comes to quality and safety. QSEN focuses on six competencies: Informatics, Quality improvement, Evidence-based practice, Teamwork and collaboration, and Patient-centered care. QSEN relates to this course because they focus on evidence based practice to improve the quality of nursing. Evidence-based practice is defined as integrating best current evidence with clinical expertise and patient/family preferences and values for delivery of optimal health care (QSEN,2003). This course focuses on nursing research and its application in delivering an evidence-based approach in clinical nursing practices. Institute, Q. S. E. N. (2018, August 13). News. Quality and Safety Education for Nurses. https://qsen.
org/evidence-based-practice/. Response 2 Brynn QSEN is quality and safety education for nurses. The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project addresses the challenge of preparing future nurses with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) necessary to continuously improve the quality and safety of the healthcare systems within which they work (QSEN 2020). I think they way that QSEN relates to this course is that we have been learning about ways to do research and alot of that has been about bettering the environment for our patients or ways to have even better outcomes for our patients. It has also taught us ways that we can implement research and ideas to improve quality and safety in our work environments. As nurses we are always continuing our education and it almost always has to do with keeping our patients safe. QSEN will always be apart of our job. Response Posts: In your responses to your classmates, contribute to the discussion with your own original opinions, expland on a classmates discussion points, and/or offer suggestions not already mentioned. . Response 1Corbin Staffing ratios is a vital topic of concern in healthcare today, especially in the nursing field today. Increasing staffing ratios puts nurses and patientâs safety in danger. The expectations of nursing are already high and puts many nurses at risk for complete burnout and many other health issues. Nurse satisfaction and retention rates are affected by these ratios. The problem is only worsened by the increasing demand for nurses and continual budget cuts. There is a plethora of studies regarding the literal danger for patient outcomes when ratios are high. For instance, one study found a 16% lower survival rate in hospitals with poor nursing environments. They also found an additional 5% decrease in survival rate for each additional patient added to a nurse (McHugh, MD, et al., 2016). In another study on infection rates found: âA 2012 study found that reducing the number of nurses with high levels of fatigue (burnout) from the average of 30 percent to 10 percent could prevent 4,160 infections in Pennsylvania hospitals alone, saving approximately $41 million.â (Cimiotti, et al., 2012) These are scary enough results to draw concern and prompt change! Fortunately, efforts have started to be made to change the current staffing ratio crisis. A bill was introduced to the Senate in May of 2019 sponsored by senator Sherrod Brown, (D-OH). The law being referred was entitled: Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality Care Act of 2019. Within the document, were specific nurse to patient ratios for specific units within the hospital. They also reflect the ANAâs recommendations for handling safe staffing ratios for nurses in hospitals. After being introduced to the Senate the act was passed on to the Committee on Energy and Commerce. From there, it was again passed on to the Subcommittee of Health. No further actions have been made on this act since 2019, so I would see need for further action to be promoted. Preferably to the Speaker of the House and the Majority Leader that decide what will reach the floor. Testimonies and further letters should be sent to the committees so that interest can be improved. References: Cimiotti, J. P., Aiken, L. H., Sloane, D. M., & Wu, E. S. (2012). Patients have gone to their primary care doctor and even the hospital for minor injuries and have been prescribed opioid medications when those medications arenât a part of the recommended treatment. Unfortunately, some of these patients arenât provided with alternative methods to help ease and control pain, rather they are just given pills and told to take them. In addition to that, they arenât being properly educated on the effects or even how to properly take these medications, and how to dispose of them should they not need the rest of the medication. Devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic include increases in opioid misuse and related overdoses, as well as the rising incidence of newborns experiencing withdrawal syndrome due to opioid use and misuse during pregnancy (What is the U.S. Opioid Epidemic, n.d.). Even more alarming, as stated by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, opioid manufacturers are paying U.S. doctors huge sums of money for speaking, consulting, and other servicesâand the more opioids a doctor prescribes, the more money he or she gets paid by those same manufacturers. Biden plans to help end the opioid crisis and ensure access to effective treatment and recovery for substance use disorders (The Biden Plan to End the Opioid Crisis, 2020). This will include holding accountable big pharmaceutical companies, executives, and others responsible for their role in triggering this epidemic. As nurses, it is vital for us to advocate for our patients and further instruct them on the safe usage of opioid medications as well as alternative methods for combating acute and chronic pain.
