Sections 1 and 2: Please write about TWO of the above three selections. Your assignment is to
identify the elements and processes of each piece that are distinctive for that piece, that make the piece function the way that it does, and that lead to the artistic experience as you perceive it.
Some notes: In the Feldman, pay attention to the syllables, sounds or words being sung, and the ways in which
these change over time; the degree and quality of coordination between the voices, and where the
voices sit in the stereo field; and what kinds of dissonances or harmonies are achieved by this music. In the La Monte Young selection, listen to at least ONE FULL HOUR from any part of the posted
recording. You will note that the piano is tuned very differently from our accustomed system of
pitches. Pay attention to the effect that this tuning has on both the performer and the listener. Since
the performer is the composer, and since he is improvising within a set structure much like a jazz
musician, ask yourself how the tuning exercises an influence on the performance, in terms of pacing,
rhythmic patterns, timing, register, speed of articulation, loudness, and anything else you can
identify.
In the Riley, be aware that this is a solo performance with a Β“phantom bandΒ”, and that there must be
specific technical interventions allowing Riley to create the texture of multiple parts. Listen for any
unusual or unexpected moments that stand out to you. You may want to speculate on what Riley is
doing in live performance (since this is a live concert recording) to create this experience.

should write approximately 1000 Β– 1200 words on each of the two pieces.
Section 3: Create an imaginary work of experimental music. Think of a musical situation that you
consider to be especially interesting, and compose a score in which the workings of this piece, its
manner of performance, the conditions necessary for its realization, are detailed. Try to fashion a
piece that interrogates the very roles of composer, performer and listener, and that highlights the act
of performing and listening in a particular way. In other words, think about your piece more from the
standpoint of what it will do rather than how it will sound. For inspiration, think back to Cage, Reich,
Lucier, Radigue, Cardew, Feldman, Young and Oliveros; and use your imagination to re-configure
ideas of the space of performance; the relationships between performer, instrument, sound, room
and listener; acoustics and instruments; repetition and sameness; presence and absence; or any
other categories of sound articulation that music can be the medium of.
Your writing should include a clear score using either graphic, text-based or instructional notation
(NOT musical staff notation!), as well as a reflection on what you have in mind and what you intend
the piece to do, and on how you think this piece would sound in performance.
