Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is for the student to analyze food labels
for the nutritional value of a selected food item and evaluate the brands of
that item. For example frozen chicken dinner brands: Smart Ones, Lean Cuisine,
Swanson, and Healthy Choice. The knowledge gained to complete this assignment
will assist the student when reading labels to try and make the healthiest
choice possible.
Requirements:
Select a food item IN YOUR
PANTRY and compare it with 2 other brands of that item. Labels must be submitted with the
paper. This can be the actual label
or a copy of the label.
Compare the food labels for
serving size, calories, fats, cholesterol, sodium, potassium,
carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, and minerals.
Based on the comparison
information analyze the food item for healthy value and cost-effectiveness
(too pricy, coupons, store that it was bought in). Including which item,
if any, you would recommend with
rationale. The rationale should be based on factual
information; the class textbook or peer-reviewed journals must be cited to
support your rationale.
