INSTRUCTIONS
1. Read Chapter 16, with special attention to the Introduction, pp. 729; The Freedmens Bureau, pp. 733-734; and Land, Labor, and Disappointment, pp. 751-752; Southern Resistance and White Redemption pp. 754-756.
2. Read Primary Source Documents 1 and 2 linked below.
3. Answer the questions that I have listed below, RATHER THAN THE FOCUS QUESTION(S).
This will be your essay for your first post in this Discussion Assignment. Click on Start A New Thread below and type your essay in the text box, then post. You can also type your essay in a word processing program and copy and paste it into the text box if you wish.
4. After that, you will need to comment on other students posts. Also check to see if other students have commented on your post. One thorough essay post followed by 3-4 thoughtful and thorough posts to other students is a good rule of thumb for acceptable participation. It is best to post your essay early, then go back into the assignment to post comments over the duration that the discussion assignment is open for completion. This is how we achieve an on-going conversation in these assignments.
*Users must start a thread before they can read and reply to other threads

ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS NOT THE ONES ON THE PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMEN
T!!!!!!!!!!
QUESTIONS:
1) In what ways did white southerners react to Reconstruction?
2) In what ways did black southerners react to Reconstruction?
3) Why was Reconstruction ultimately considered to be a failed experiment?
4) After the failure of Reconstruction, the Ku Klux Klan would assume power over much of southern politics. Jim Crow Laws, including racial segregation in southern communities would be implemented in the South. It was not until the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s-60s that the tide would turn again. What factors (economic, political, social, and cultural) do you think led to the failure of Reconstruction followed by decades of Jim Crow in the South?
(There are no right or wrong answers here. Reflect on what you have learned in this course and give me your perspective- backed up by factual information you have learned.)

Reconstruction was intended to bring the South back into the Union in a peaceful and cohesive way, while protecting the civil liberties of freed slaves who were now American citizens under the law. Reconstruction ended in 1877. Decades later (1950s) we see images such as the ones below. Why were things so slow to change/progress in American society?
