For the second source paper, choose *at least* five documents from chapters 22-28 of Voices of Liberty from which you will draw your analysis. You should aim to have at least two (and no more than four) *short* – roughly ten words or less – targeted quotations from each of the five documents. You may incorporate more documents into your paper, but you must use at least five. As you go through the documents you have chosen, work toward identifying a thesis or question for analysis and discussion by considering 1) what do these documents share in common?; 2) how do they differ, in tone, style of argument, audience or speaker?; 3) how do these documents draw on history and larger events to make their argument?; 4) how do these documents define liberty or freedom? and 5) what is the context surrounding the documents (are they responding to events or actions)? If you go through each of your chosen documents and ask these questions, you will, by the end of your analysis, have the beginnings of a thesis (or perhaps several) and a paper.

rce papers will be judged based on engagement with the topic, question or idea presented, use of evidence and effectiveness of writing. Rubrics will be available on Canvas. You will need to develop a thesis or a question you wish to address and utilize specific evidence from the source text (Voices of Freedom) to support your points. You should identify a particular event or specific issue that you find compelling, provoking, or problematic, and analyze both the events surrounding that issue as well as the way the source material in Voices of Liberty touches on these events or issues in your writing.
This assignment allows for outside research, but the paper is primarily focused on your analysis integrating the source material from the Voices of Freedom text into the historical narrative you are learning from the textbook, lectures and discussions. These writing assignments allow you to address key ideas or aspects of the sources as evidence for your own points. Each paper should be at least three pages, double-spaced or approximately 750 words.
