Go through your inbox and identify some emails youve sent or received. You can use University-related emails, work-related emails, or emails that relate to your participation as an actor in the economy (e.g. between you and a landlord or between you and a business). Emails TO you from others can be from any time, but emails FROM you to others should pre-date your participation in the course. The emails should be at least three or four sentences and not exceed three paragraphs.
Youll identify three emails, one each from any of the following content types:
Low-stakes, routine request
High-stakes, non-routine request
Goodwill message
Complaint
High- or low-stakes bad news message
You may have identified a low-stakes request, a goodwill message, and a high-stakes bad news message. Or you may have identified a high-stakes request, a complaint, and a low-stakes bad news message. It doesnt matter
. It can be any combination, provided the three emails are each of a different content type and come from this list. Be sure to pick emails that have enough content (one or two paragraphs) to allow you to show off your analysis skills.
Step 2:
Provide a three-quarters to one-page analysis of the email using the three lenses (email protocol, content structure, and sentence-level stylistics). Be thorough and systematic. Bullet points or outline form are fine.
Step 3:
Rewrite the email following best practices in all three lenses.
OUTPUT
Youll put together a portfolio that includes your work and submit it as a Word document here.
Here are some samples of thorough analyses submitted in the past (although youll be submitting a Word file).
CHOOSE ONLY 3 OUT OF 5 OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF EMAILS
Please also take a look at the files that I upload for you. It is a good example of how to do this task.
