Dear Students,
I am writing up a writing lesson now to inform you that a theoretical framework means in our case a general social, historical, economic FRAMEWORK in which to couch our ideas and how they affect educational achievement and attainment. These frameworks are often imply the structural barriers many students face.
For example, a social framework in which the American Dream is not just getting an education and a college education but AN IVY LEAGUE education. Yes, immigrant and non-immigrant parents see this as a status symbol- the equivalent as Bourdieu would write, to A ROYAL TITLE! It is the lottery ticket to the best professions, grad schools, networking and income.
The subsections of this social framework are parenting, economic status, neighborhood and its schools, peers in the neighborhood and individual ability and ambition.
Another example would be listing racist incidents which would also be framed under historical and social laws (Jim Crow Laws, Separate but Equal), attitudes as well as separating out individual acts of racism.
I have realized from reading your papers, that although they contain the facts/information, you have to frame these idea
s in a larger picture of what is happening.
Another example from our readings is the pre-k story:
How does income and neighborhood affect the type and quality of pre-k children receive? The historical and social settings (segregated housing and schools) prevent low-income minority children from receiving the high quality education of higher income groups.
From How the Other Half Learns: The historical and social settings (segregated housing and schools) in certain neighborhoods has limited the educational attainment of those students (children of parents who seek the benefits of mobility through education) like Tiffany or Daisy to choose quasi-like private schools called Charter Schools. Always remember it is the self-selection of parents (parents who put their childrens names in the lottery and seek better education) who determine how the child and the school performs. These parents are removing their children from the disengaged children that surround the Tiffanys of public schools.
1-So take a point of view- a framework- a thesis statement
2-Then hang the details of the story onto the framework
This is basically Sotomayors point from p. 133 which is in your syllabus.
